How to use Motion to update the titles for First Fridays

Please DO NOT save over the original Motion File! Please do a "save as" and create your own new Title.motion & Title.mov!

1. Open Motion via Finder -> Go -> Applications -> Motion (the icon is of a gyroscope and a color wheel).
Open the file FF Intro General.motion located at Firstfridays08 login : Desktop -> First Fridays -> FF opening -> FF Opening 2008

2. The default view in Motion does not include the layer. To turn this on go to Window and check Layers (or press Command-4).

Under the Layers Tab there are four (4) objects.
Title One
Title Two
Title Three
FF Intro w music

The "Title" objects are text boxes containing the title properties (effects & timing). You should not need to change these effects.
"FF Intro w music" is a copy of the intro which is used to ensure proper sizing of the titles and can be used to proof the titles.

3. Select Title One with your mouse. On the Motion Timeline (bottom of the screen) the Title One clip appears. Move the Playhead to a point near the end of the title. You can now see how the current title reads; (if you check the FF Intro layer you can watch how everything fits together).
4. In the window on the left (default is File Browser) select the Inspector Tab; four new tabs open: Properties, Behaviors, Filters, Text.
5. Select the Text Tab.
6. At the bottom of the Text Tab is a window labeled: Text. Inside this window you will see the current titles (also displayed in the Viewer).
7. Replace the current titles with the new titles. Change fonts, size, etc as necessary.

Please notice that this changes the size of the text box.

8. Be sure the Playhead in the Timeline is near the end of the Title, (you should begin to see the title fading out). Select one side of the text box and drag it to the edge of the text box in the poster. Repeat for the other side.
9. Watch the title to see if any other adjustments need to be made.*
10. Repeat the above steps for Title Two & Title Three.

11. Save the completed project as a Motion file. DO NOT SAVE OVER THE ORIGINAL GENERAL TITLE!
12. Import the new Motion project directly into your FCP project.
13. Add the Motion file directly to your timeline and align the start of the alpha channel to the beginning of your footage and add music.

*You should not need to change any of the effects unless you want to alter the look of the Titles. The only resizing that needs to be done is the final size of the text box.
